• ABOUT THE SITE

This site is dedicated to informing the public about the older population. Gerontology, advocacy, Alzheimer’s info, and other science-based or informative anecdotes make this site what it is. All of the photos used on this site are ones that I have either created or taken personally, or I will state otherwise that they do not belong to me. I do my best to keep my opinion an educational and informative one, but I am definitely an advocate for the elderly population. The articles I list will often come with links to their original source, and all of the information I publish here has come from my own experience or my findings in news articles or the web. A lot of people don’t know much about the aging population, so I created this site with the hope that it will keep my audience invested in this cause.

    ABOUT RACHAEL WONDERLIN

I’m currently going to college for my degree in Psychology. After college, I plan to go on to graduate school for a higher degree in Gerontology. I have always been really interested in science and the medical field, but it took a long time before I realized what I wanted to do with that interest. As a sophomore in high school, I knew I had to complete some hours for admission into the National Honor Society. I started volunteering at a local senior home to get a few hours, but eventually started connecting with a lot of the residents there. One of them, whom I mention often in my posts, Helen R., is still a friend of mine. She’s 95 and still living in the home, so when I am home on break from college I’ll go and visit her. During my time volunteering, I realized that there were a lot of things that needed to be improved in senior home facilities, and I became intensely interested in what could be fixed. There’s a lot of abuse of power going on in these places that no one knows about or just plain ignores. Did you know that suicide rates are actually highest for the elderly population? Or that over 60% of anti-psychotic drugs are purchased for senior homes?

I created a program, Adopt a Grandparent, at my university, which allows students to spend time with residents in a local senior home every Sunday. It was the first of its kind, and still remains the only program focused on the elderly.
